Kataragama is a holy town for Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alike. Pilgrims come from across the island and beyond, paying their respects at shrines to Kataragama, Vishnu and Ganesha; a temple built in honour of the Buddha’s visit; and a bodhi tree, a sapling from the original under which the Buddha was born.
